As you all know, iOS 5.1 has been released last week together with the new iPad. Everybody now is trying to upgrade their current operating systems on their iDevices. Also, everybody is thinking of jailbreaking their devices, too.
Even if the time was very short, some jailbreak solutions have appeared. I will teach you today how to do a tethered jailbreak, using the Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 utility. However, please note that this solution will work only on older iDevices, which use the A4 chip: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and iPod Touch.The iPhone 3GS with old bootrom which will benefit of untethered jailbreak.
Having in mind that this is a tethered jailbreak solution, you ill have to run iBooty every time you restart your phone, in order to have access to the jailbreak and your iDevice, too.
If you baseband is 06.15.00, you will have the possibility to restore to iOS 5.1 and iBooty will help you on getting your device out of Recovery Mode.
How To Jailbreak iOS 5.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch (Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2)
Step 1: Use the following links in order to download Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 and download iOS 5.1, too;
Step 2: Open Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 and click on the blue button (with arrow) in order to continue with the jailbreak process;
Step 3: Click on “Browse”. Now you need to head to the location where you have saved the iOS 5.1 file.
Step 5: After the checking process has finished you will be provided with a window which will contain three options: “simple mode”, “expert mode” and “baseband preservation mode”. For iPhone 4 you will have a forth option: “iFaith Mode”.
“Simple mode” will reate the custom ipsw based on some presets.
“Expert mode” will provide you with the possibility to customize all you need to introduce in the firmware. We will refer to this mode later.
“Baseband preservation mode” is responsible for creating a custom firmware without jailbreak. Obviously, it will preserve the baseband.
“iFaith Mode” allows us to select a saved SHSH. It should have been saved with iFaith in order to create a custom firmware from it. That SHSH can be used in order to make a restore only to that iOS version.
You will have to choose the “expert mode”. Therefore click on the “Build ISPW” button.
Step 9: Now, after Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 has ended creating the custom firmware, all you have to do is to restore your Apple device with this new firmware. In order to accomplish this task, you have to open iTunes, hold the SHIFT key and click on the “restore” button. Head to the location where the new firmware has been saved (usually, the desktop, as described above) and select it.
As I mentioned before this is not an untethered jailbreak. therefore you will have to use an application which will provide you back with the jailbreak after restarting your iDevice. The name of this application is iBooty.
So, open iBooty from your desktop and select the iPhone model (or iDevice) that you want to start.
Step 11: Press the “Start” button and follow the instructions in order to set your iDevice in the DFU mode. After doing this your jaibreak process for iOS 5.1 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch has been ended.
